What you need to know...

Riding Privileges & Cancellation Policy

Weekly Lessons as pre-determined each term. All lessons are 1-hour in duration including catching, tack up, groundwork, in saddle time and return to the barn. If you show up late, your lesson duration will be adjusted accordingly.  A private arena is not guaranteed due to facility restrictions.

If you have a special event or vacation planned, please alert the coach ASAP. Unfortunately, monthly fees will not be prorated if you are unable to complete your monthly allotment of rides.

Hudson Horsemanship will provide make-up lessons for all lessons that are cancelled by the coach due to their own unforeseen circumstances. Hudson Horsemanship is not obligated to provide make up lessons for rides missed due to severe weather, poor air quality nor events out of their control however they will always do their best to ensure you make as many of your rides as possible when time permits.

Riders commit to a weekly timeslot and are allotted a maximum of 2 re-scheduled rides during the term. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is requested for a rider to request a re-schedule and book a makeup ride within their term allowance. Makeup lessons will be offered based on schedule and facility availability. A list of available lesson spots will be maintained, and riders can choose from open spots when a re-schedule is required. Due to schedule restrictions, new lessons spots will not be created for makeup rides. Riders must choose from the list of existing, open timeslots. If none of the offered/available dates work for you, the lesson and fees paid are forfeited.

If less than 6 hours’ notice is given, the lesson is forfeited and is not eligible for a makeup ride nor refund.

If unable to attend the booked makeup lesson, the rider forfeits their missed lesson and the makeup lesson. Makeup rides must be completed within the term and cannot be carried over to the next term nor refunded. Cancellations beyond the 2 makeup rides per term will be forfeited without refund.

Due to time restrictions, makeup lessons may be shared with other students even if your usual lessons are private.

We ask that those feeling unwell alert the coach ASAP to discuss risks to the health and well-being of everyone. If anyone in your party shows up to Lazy S Arena with active cold/flu symptoms, masks will be required to be worn whether we are indoors or out. Due to the high touch and close-proximity nature of the lessons, this is non-negotiable. Hudson Horsemanship will provide masks if you do not have them. If someone refuses to wear a mask, they will have to remain in their vehicle or will be asked to leave the property.

Lesson Designations

  • Newbies will be private only with the option to become a duo/group once comfortable at a walk/trot and able tack up with minimal supervision. Riders will be with the coach from start to finish so the entire process (catch/tack/ride/return to pasture) falls within the 60-min window.

  • Competent beginners (comfortable at a walk/trot and can tack up) can be in duos or trios with ONE coach or in a larger group with ONE coach and ONE assistant. The assumption is these riders can do most of the prep independently with minimal assistance (and parental supervision if 16 or younger). The expectation is that the rider shows up 10-15 min early to catch the horse and get to the barn for tack up. We want to be in the arena by 4:15/5:15/6:15pm, etc.  Untacking will be coach-supervised but riders should be able to return the horse to the paddock without coach supervision in order to maximize lesson time. This means leaving the arena no later than 4:50/5:50/6:50pm, etc. Minors must be supervised by a parent/guardian.

  • Advanced beginners (practicing loping) can be in groups of 2-4 with ONE coach but an assistant will often be assigned. It is expected that everyone in this category can have their horse caught, groomed, tacked and at the arena ready for warm up by 4:10/5:10/6:10pm, etc. It is also assumed that riders can untack and return the horse to the pasture without the coach so they don’t have to leave the arena until the end of the lesson window. Minors must be supervised by a parent/guardian.

  • Intermediates or better can be in groups of 2-4 with ONE coach. It is expected that anyone in this category can have their horse caught, groomed, tacked and ready for warm up by 4:10/5:10/6:10pm, etc. Students are responsible for untacking and returning the horse to the paddock without coach supervision so they don’t have to leave the arena until the end of the lesson window. Minors must be supervised by a parent/guardian.

Protective headgear will be worn while riding

Rider agrees to provide their own protective and approved riding helmet and agrees to wear this helmet each time he/she rides and whenever minors are within 20 feet of the horses.

Appropriate riding apparel will be worn

Rider understands that sneakers, sandals, shorts and restricting clothing are not appropriate riding apparel, and he/she will not wear them while riding. Rider will wear appropriate footwear, i.e., either paddock boots, tall boots or regular shoes with a low heel. If the student does not show up dressed appropriately to ride, the lesson will be groundwork.

Waivers & Additional Visitors

The lesson program is located on private property and therefore Hudson Horsemanship & their students have limited visitation rights. Your lesson contract allows you on the property for your booked timeslots only and your visitation privileges expire the day of your last contractual lesson.

For minor riders, immediate family members (parents/guardians and siblings) will be required to sign waivers to access the property and view lessons. Additional guests are not permitted unless the usual guardian is unable to attend the lesson and an alternate adult is required to bring the minor to their lesson. Such swaps must be communicated to Hudson Horsemanship with 24 hours’ notice for proper documentation to be prepared.

Unfortunately, while we understand the excitement of riding, additional audience members are not allowed due to facility restrictions and liability issues. Unauthorized guests will be asked to leave the property and you risk the lesson being cancelled for breach of contract.

Vehicle information is also required for security purposes.

Mandatory Alberta Equestrian Federation Membership

All riders must be insured through the Alberta Equestrian Federation. This membership gives riders $5M in liability insurance for one low annual fee. Use of Lazy S facilities and the horses without insurance is cause for immediate termination of contract with forfeit of any fees paid.
